Evaluation of Vehicle Dynamics for Single Unit Trucks on Sloped Roadsides and Medians

چکیده
There is increasing deployment of barriers on sloped surfaces for various reasons. The crashworthiness of barriers is, however, only ascertained for installation on level surfaces. There has been analysis of the vehicle dynamics effects of vehicle-to-barrier interfaces on sloped surfaces, but there have been no reported analyses of the vehicle dynamics of trucks traversing sloped surfaces. In this effort, the dynamics of a standard single unit truck (SUT) on a mild 6:1 sloped surface are evaluated to gain insights into the effect of the truck-to-barrier interface. The analysis addresses both roadside and median conditions. The effects of the vehicle departure angles and speed are investigated. The results are compared to the level surface case and the vehicle dynamics for an 8,000 kg and a 10,000 kg singleunit truck. Working Paper NCAC 2009-W-010 August 2010

Stability of Three-Wheeled Vehicles with and without Control System
In this study, stability control of a three-wheeled vehicle with two wheels on the front axle, a three-wheeled vehicle with two wheels on the rear axle, and a standard four-wheeled vehicle are compared. For vehicle dynamics control systems, the direct yaw moment control is considered as a suitable way of controlling the lateral motion of a vehicle during a severe driving maneuver. In accorda...
متن کاملImpact of Vehicle Travel Characteristics on Level of Service: A Comparative Analysis of Rural and Urban Freeways
The effect of trucks on the level of service is determined by considering passenger car equivalents (PCE) of trucks. The current version of Highway Capacity Manual (HCM) uses a single PCE value for all tucks combined. However, the composition of truck traffic varies from location to location; therefore, a single PCE value for all trucks may not correctly represent the impact of truck traffic at...
متن کاملPhysical and Performance Characteristics of Heavy Vehicles
A wide variety of heavy vehicle types—including single-unit trucks, combination trucks with one, two, or three trailers, and buses—operate on U.S. highways. These heavy vehicle types each have unique physical and performance characteristics that interact with highway features. This chapter summarizes the physical and performance characteristics of heavy vehicles. The issues addressed in this ch...
متن کاملA set-covering formulation for a drayage problem with single and double container loads
This paper addresses a drayage problem, which is motivated by the case study of a real carrier. Its trucks carry one or two containers from a port to importers and from exporters to the port. Since up to four customers can be served in each route, we propose a set-covering formulation for this problem where all possible routes are enumerated. This model can be efficiently solved to optimality b...
